A huge fire engulfed the set of popular TV serial Anupamaa at Film City, Mumbai, in the early hours of Friday morning. The fire broke out at around 5:00 AM—two hours ahead of schedule completely burning down the set as crew members were already present on location getting ready for the day.
Luckily, there were no casualties reported. If the fire had happened a little later when filming was in progress, the damage could have been catastrophic. This incident joins the long list of concerns regarding fire safety negligence at Mumbai film studios. It is alleged by insiders within the industry that most studios regularly avoid conducting compulsory fire safety inspections, endangering the lives of hundreds of people daily.
Adjoining sets avoided destruction by a whisker, demonstrating how close the conflagration came to unleashing a full-blown disaster.
AICWA Calls for Accountability and Action
Reacting to this, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) asked for a high-court judicial probe. The association also appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to step in and take action forthwith. AICWA also called for suspending Film City’s Managing Director and Mumbai Labour Commissioner for not implementing fire safety measures.

Besides, AICWA is demanding a criminal FIR against the production house of Anupamaa, the channel, Film City authorities, and the Labour Department. The association made alarming claims that the fire could have been done to fabricate insurance claims.
There are also fears that the real casualties, if any, could be concealed to escape legal repercussions. AICWA has asked authorities to investigate in-depth and ascertain the facts.
For avoiding future calamities, AICWA is asking for a complete fire safety checkup in all the film studios in Maharashtra. It is demanding that any organization which goes against safety standards be blacklisted, stressing the immediate need for responsibility to save workers’ lives.
