Thug Life Hits Rock Bottom! Kamal Haasan’s Film Plummets to Rs 1.75 Crore on Day 6

Thug Life, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s highly touted gangster drama, is already shaping up as one of the biggest box office flops of 2025. Following a tepid extended opening weekend that grossed ₹40.75 crore in India (₹33 crore from Tamil Nadu and ₹7.75 crore from elsewhere), the movie has not gained traction during weekdays.

Early indications for Day 6 (Tuesday, June 10) are that collections have fallen further to the meager ₹1.75–₹2 crore, after a sub-par Monday of ₹2.25 crore. The overall six-day India gross now would be about ₹44.75 crore, a big disappointment for a film that was hyped as a big-ticket reunion between Haasan and Ratnam, almost four decades after their cult Nayakan.

Day-Wise India Gross Collection:

Thursday (Opening): ₹17.00 crore

Friday: ₹7.50 crore

Saturday: ₹8.75 crore

Sunday: ₹7.50 crore

Monday: ₹2.25 crore

Tuesday: ₹1.75 crore

Total: ₹44.75 crore

Audience Rejection Across Markets

The box office performance of the movie has been particularly weak beyond Tamil Nadu, with zero collections in the Hindi and Telugu markets. Even in the home state, daytime occupancies have fallen below 20%, indicating a lack of audience interest. Not having been released in Karnataka, where Haasan had made controversial statements, may have denied the film anything between ₹5 crore but even with that, reception overall has been lukewarm.

A Far Cry from Vikram

Unlike Kamal Haasan’s 2022 release Vikram, which grossed more than ₹400 crore worldwide, Thug Life is likely to close its run with less than ₹60 crore in India and less than ₹100 crore worldwide. In a contrasting scenario, Housefull 5, released a day after, has already surpassed ₹100 crore in India.

As powerful non-theatrical deals eased monetary losses, Thug Life’s box office failure constitutes a huge blow to both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam.
