The Blockbuster is coming: A Minecraft Movie poised for huge second weekend – Get ready for the numbers

A Minecraft Movie continues to mine gold at the box office, recording an impressive haul on its fifth day, which fell on discount Tuesday. Audiences showed up in droves to take advantage of lower ticket prices, pushing the Warner Bros. blockbuster to a massive $12.8 million single-day gross.

Second-Biggest Tuesday for a Game Adaptation

The video game-inspired film now holds the title of the second-biggest Tuesday ever for a video game adaptation, trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $15.5 million. Buoyed by strong word of mouth and widespread family appeal, A Minecraft Movie saw a 28.6% jump from Monday, bringing its domestic total to $185 million.

It’s now on the verge of overtaking Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s U.S. lifetime gross of $190.9 million. If the momentum continues, the Jason Momoa and Jack Black-led adventure will soon become the first 2025 release to surpass the $200 million mark domestically, all within just a week of release.

From Pixels to the Big Screen

Directed by Jared Hess, the film stars Jason Momoa, Emma Meyer, Jennifer Coolidge, Sebastian Hensen, and Danielle Brooks. The plot follows four misfits who are transported into a blocky, pixelated world. Guided by the experienced crafter Steve, they must rely on creativity and teamwork to survive and save the cubic universe.

A Decade in the Making

The road to release was long. First announced in 2014 by Mojang Studios, the project saw numerous changes in creative direction. Stability came when Legendary Entertainment joined in 2022. Filming took place in New Zealand throughout 2024, with Sony Imageworks leading VFX efforts.

Despite mixed reviews following its March 30 London premiere, the film has struck a chord with both new viewers and nostalgic fans, earning $331 million globally—making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the tenth-highest-grossing video game movie of all time.
