Tanvi The Great Falls Flat! Anupam Kher’s Film Opens with a Mere Rs 30 Lakh on Day 1

Tanvi The Great, directed by established actor Anupam Kher, released in theatres on July 18. Directed by Kher and featuring newcomer Shubhangi Dutt, the film depicts the moving life of Tanvi Raina, a 21-year-old woman with autism. The emotional drama seeks to bring out the importance of neurodiversity and how people and families with it struggle to lead normal lives.

Anupam Kher plays Colonel Pratap Raina, Tanvi’s supportive grandfather, while Pallavi Joshi appears as Vidya, Tanvi’s mother. The ensemble cast also includes Jackie Shroff and Boman Irani in pivotal roles. The film is jointly produced by Anupam Kher Studio and NFDC (National Film Development Corporation of India).

Box Office Opening Impacted by ‘Saiyaara’
In spite of its soulful subject, Tanvi The Great took a sluggish start at the box office. On day one, the movie earned only ₹30 lakh in net business, overshadowed largely by Saiyaara’s high-octane release that opened to a stunning ₹20 crore. The buzz and star appeal surrounding Saiyaara have impacted the attendance for Kher’s movie, particularly at multiplexes.

Besides, Tanvi The Great is restricted by its genre and storytelling approach. Contrary to mainstream entertainers, it heavily depends on word-of-mouth. The dramatic narrative might attract an audience in the long run, especially in the form of audiences eager for socially conscious storytelling.

Kher’s Continued Presence in Indian Cinema
Anupam Kher, who made his acting debut in 1984 with Saaransh, was last seen in Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino with Neena Gupta. Famous for his iconic performances in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and The Kashmir Files, Kher now shares his director’s vision on screen with Tanvi The Great.

The film is currently playing in theaters across India.
