Superboys of Malegaon, a slice-of-life film produced by Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Reema Kagti, has also met an unimpressive run at the box office after release. The film, featuring Adarsh Gourav as a director, with Vineet Kumar Singh and Shashank Arora in key roles, narrates the motivational tale of Nasir Shaikh, a small-town Malegaon filmmaker. Despite critical acclaim, the film has been struggling to compete with other releases in the market, including Crazxy and the blockbuster Chhaava.

Disappointing Box Office Performance

Going into its second weekend, Superboys of Malegaon has continued to experience a decline in box office collections. On day 9, the movie was set to earn around Rs 5 lakh, taking its eight-day total collection to Rs 3.25 crore. The film’s inability to hold on at the box office is a pointer to its difficulty in pulling a bigger crowd, particularly with stronger competition from other movies.

A Strategic Shift to Amazon Prime

In spite of its box office failure, Superboys of Malegaon is likely to see a second run on Amazon Prime after its cinematic outing. Producers of the film, Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Films, have planned to release the movie through OTT as a measure to break even from non-theatrical business. This is an increasingly prevalent trend in the industry, whereby more films have the opportunity of finding a larger space for release beyond the mainstream theatre.

Critical Acclaim and Awards

Superboys of Malegaon has received critical acclaim, having won the Best Feature Film award at the 2025 National Indian Film Festival of Australia. Based on the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon, the film was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, cementing its critical acclaim despite the fact that it was a box office failure.
