After a three-year hiatus from the big screen, Kajol has made a powerful return with Maa, a mythological horror thriller directed by Vishal Furia. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film earned a respectable Rs 4.15 crore on its opening day, a strong start for a genre that remains relatively niche in Bollywood.
Strong Evening Showings Push Occupancy
Maa recorded an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 16.49% on Friday. The day began with a slow start, as morning shows saw only 8.23% occupancy. However, interest picked up in the afternoon with 20.08%, and evening shows further boosted the numbers to 21.16%. The growing interest through the day indicates positive word-of-mouth and curiosity surrounding Kajol’s new avatar.

Mixed Reviews for Style and Representation
Early reviews have praised the concept and Kajol’s performance but criticized the execution. A review from News18 noted, “The concept and story have substance, but the film lacked largely because of its style of storytelling.” It further pointed out the overuse of stereotypes, particularly in the depiction of Bengali culture and accents. The exaggerated presence of a 30-foot Kali Maa statue and Ronit Roy’s heavily accented Hindi were also flagged as clichéd and off-putting.
Kajol Shines as a Fierce Mother in a Supernatural World
In Maa, Kajol plays Ambika, a fearless mother fighting against dark supernatural forces to protect her daughter. The film blends mythology and horror, marking Kajol’s debut in the genre. She stars alongside Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma.
Directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan, Maa brings a fresh genre twist to Kajol’s filmography and could gain momentum over the weekend with growing audience interest
