Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and starring Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde, is struggling at the box office. After a modest opening weekend, grossing Rs 19 crore, the suspense-thriller has seen a sharp decline in its performance. On Monday, it managed only Rs 2.50 crore, and Tuesday’s figures are expected to fall further, with day 5 estimates around Rs 2.15-2.25 crore. This brings the film’s total collections for five days to approximately Rs 23.75 crore, a disappointing result for a film led by a star like Shahid Kapoor.

A major hurdle for Deva seems to be its label as a remake. Despite the makers’ denials, the film bears a striking resemblance to the 2013 Malayalam film Mumbai Police, which likely dampened its appeal. The challenge of overcoming the “remake” tag often proves difficult, as audiences may already feel familiar with the storyline.
Adding to its troubles, Deva faces tough competition from other films. In just two days, the market will be crowded with the releases of Badass Ravikumar and Loveyapa, along with the re-releases of Padmaavat and Sanam Teri Kasam on February 7. To make matters worse, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is re-releasing in India, with over 2 lakh advance tickets already sold, drawing in fans who missed it last December.
In addition, regional films like Vidaamuyarchi and Thandel will dominate in South India, further limiting Deva’s audience. With limited scope for growth, the film is likely to end its run with a total of Rs 35 crore in India. However, its international performance is slightly better, with an expected lifetime collection of around USD 2-2.25 million, making up for some of its domestic shortfall.
