The couple, who co-wrote the album together, recently spoke about their creative process during Spotify’s Countdown To podcast series, offering fans a deeper insight into how their relationship influenced the songs.
A Natural and Unscripted Creative Process
During the podcast, Benny Blanco shared that the album’s writing process felt like Selena’s “personal journal.” He explained that their conversations were not initially planned with the intent of creating songs, but rather just genuine discussions about life, love, and emotions. Selena added that their exchanges were casual and unscripted, saying, “We’d get up in the morning, we’d have conversation, but our conversation was never going, what are we going to write in the album.” Instead, their talks were filled with emotional reflections and natural exchanges that eventually shaped the album.

Benny revealed that whenever Selena spoke, he would often secretly jot down her words, thinking they would make great lines for a song. He shared, “Sometimes you’d be saying something really important… I’d always open my phone, I’d be like, ‘that’s such a good line for a song.’” Selena, ever the open conversationalist, acknowledged noticing this habit but appreciated the way Benny captured those moments, saying it didn’t bother her.
