James Gunn, filmmaker and CEO of DC Studios, has officially released the much-anticipated trailer for his upcoming Superman film, set to hit U.S. theatres on July 11 and internationally on July 9. Starring David Corenswet as the iconic Man of Steel, the film promises a bold new take on the beloved superhero.
A Complex Hero Under Scrutiny
The trailer opens with Clark Kent agreeing to an interview with journalist Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan. What begins as a professional conversation quickly turns intense as Lois grills Superman on his controversial decision to intervene in a war. Superman defends his actions, stating that he prevented countless deaths. However, the footage reveals that his heroism is being questioned by the media, government, and the very people he seeks to protect. In a dramatic twist, Superman is shown under arrest—highlighting the film’s moral complexity.
Lex Luthor and a Powerful Ensemble Cast
Nicholas Hoult appears as the menacing Lex Luthor, challenging Superman’s influence on global affairs. “He’s somehow become the focal point of the entire world’s conversation,” Luthor declares. The trailer also teases appearances by several other DC heroes, including Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Ultraman and the Hammer of Boravia also make striking appearances.
Behind the Scenes and Creative Vision
Written and directed by Gunn, Superman is produced alongside DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. The film reunites Gunn with his trusted creative team: cinematographer Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky, and composer John Murphy. Editors William Hoy, Jason Ballantine, and Craig Alpert also lend their expertise.
