James Gunn is shaking up the DC Universe once again—this time with a bold reimagining of Supergirl that fans didn’t see coming. Following the release of Superman, which stars David Corenswet in the title role, Gunn surprised fans with the first poster of the upcoming Supergirl film, and it’s already creating buzz.
A Rebellious Heroine Takes Center Stage
Shared on July 16 via Gunn’s social media, the Supergirl poster features Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in a completely unfiltered and raw look. Clad in her superhero suit, Kara is casually sipping a drink beside the Supergirl logo that reads “Look Out”—a clever and rebellious twist on Superman’s classic motto, “Look Up.”
Fans of Superman got their first glimpse of this version of Supergirl in the post-credits scene, where she appears “drunk” at the Fortress of Solitude, confronting her cousin over her pet dog, Krypto.

A Darker Backstory for the Girl of Steel
In an interview with ScreenRant, Gunn confirmed that this Supergirl is far from the cheerful cousin often seen in comics or past films. “Yeah, that’s her. She’s a mess. A total mess,” he said, adding that Kara had a traumatic upbringing, starkly different from Clark Kent’s warm and loving environment. “He’s had this wonderful upbringing… And her background was much different. And she’s ended up different from her cousin.”
Gunn and DC Studios are moving away from the polished, idealistic version of Supergirl, opting instead to show a battle-hardened woman shaped by pain and survival.
A New Direction for the DCU
This gritty, emotionally complex Supergirl marks a dramatic tonal shift for the character—and it seems James Gunn is betting on Milly Alcock’s powerful performance to lead the charge. Supergirl promises to be unlike anything DC fans have seen before.
