James Gunn’s Superman made its official theater debut on July 11, the first in the new DC Universe reboot and the second big reboot of the Superman movie franchise. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, with supporting performances from Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as classic supervillain Lex Luthor.
Placed three years into Superman’s life as a guardian of Metropolis, the narrative tracks the Man of Steel as he navigates his dual existence by day, investigative reporter; by night, crime-fighting hero.
Twists, Revelations, and a Super Cousin
The climax introduces a stunning twist as Lex Luthor reveals a sinister secret: Superman’s Kryptonian parents had only wanted him to dominate Earth with an iron fist. Playing on this discovery, Luthor manipulates the masses while covertly working on his own sinister agenda.
In the last scene, Superman returns to the Fortress of Solitude, in which he repairs his robotic staff injured in a previous attack. As peace is re-established, an unexpected crash brings on a key new character Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock. Wearing a costume quite close to her comic book premiere, her entry leads to the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film, which will be released next year.

A Light-Hearted Post-Credit Scene
The post-credits scene goes off in a tongue-in-cheek direction, having Superman and Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi) walk through the destruction from their fight. Instead of setting up a new villain or war, the scene is concerned with character interactions and tone, indicative of a change in DC’s direction.
What’s Next for DC?
With Supergirl now added and the tone more personality and story-oriented, the DC Universe under Gunn is seemingly set to present a new, character-oriented chapter.
