Global superstar Priyanka Chopra is in the news not for being part of a new movie, but for what she eats. The actress was recently targeted by online backlash after a video went viral of her choosing to have a hot dog instead of vada pav at the premiere of her new movie, Heads of State.

Food Choice Sparks Cultural Debate

In the recently-viral video, Priyanka is sat deliberating on an array of foods from Indian street food such as samosas and vada pav to international favorites such as empanadas and hot dogs. Her ultimate choice of a hot dog reignited criticism from a social media influencer who was critical about not picking Indian favorites, suggesting it made her “less desi.”

“Didn’t Know There Was a Syllabus for Being Desi”

Stepping up to the defense, Priyanka went live on her Instagram Stories and posted the video with a cheeky comment: “Wow bro! Didn’t know there was a syllabus for being desi. It’s not that serious,” accompanied by laughing emojis. Her clapback resonated with fans who appreciated her shutting down cultural policing and insisted that identity is not food-defined
