Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the 2015 emotional hit starring Salman Khan, remains a favorite among Bollywood audiences. Directed by Kabir Khan, the movie narrated the poignant tale of Pavan, a pious Hanuman devotee who goes on to reunite a silent Pakistani girl, Munni, with her family on the other side of the border.
The movie was a box office hit and earned praise for its depth, acting, and theme of one-ness and empathy. Of course, there has been a steady rumor mill going over the years on whether a sequel would be made. Now, there is fresh excitement as director Kabir Khan has stated that talks are indeed happening.
Kabir Khan Breaks His Silence
In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Kabir Khan mentioned that he and Salman Khan had been discussing a possible sequel of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Confirming the talks, Kabir emphasized the need not to hurry with a project that is so emotionally resonant and has such legacy.
“Surely, we have discussed Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2. In the modern age and era, when all franchises are going great guns, we are being cautious. We don’t want to make a sequel of the most hit film of the past two decades just for the sake of it,” said Kabir.
Gardening a Cherished Legacy
Kabir Khan was categorical that any sequel would only happen if the narrative is strong enough to compete with the original. “We don’t intend to spoil the legacy of a lovely film like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. If and when a narrative strikes us perhaps now, or next year we shall certainly create Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2,” he said, providing a silver lining without hyping it too much.
He also mentioned that although he has generally avoided sequels, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a special one given how much it connects with him as a director.
The Road Ahead
Kabir’s last outing, Chandu Champion featuring Kartik Aaryan, had a cold reception at the box office. The director is now busy writing his next script, while fans eagerly await a solid announcement of the sequel.
For the time being, even though there is no word on official release or confirmation as yet, Bajrangi Bhaijaan fans can feel assured that Salman and Kabir are on the same page as far as their intent to do justice to the film’s legacy goes—when and if the right story does eventually come along.
