Having made Amar Singh Chamkila a commercial success, award-winning director Imtiaz Ali is now focusing on an untitled period romance set in the 1940s, the era of India’s Partition. The untitled film will delve into the emotional and personal toll of the historic migration, retracing the heartbreak and dislocation wrought by the Partition.
A Love Story Set Against Historical Turmoil
Based in Punjab, the film is about a young couple Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh whose love is put to the test as their lives are both uprooted during the violence and displacement of the period. The movie, as per a source quoted by Mid-Day, “looks at Partition and its after-effects from the lens of two lovers.”. While Sharvari features as the young female lead opposite Vedang, Imtiaz is already discussing two more lead actresses for major roles, since the film deals with various generations of families.
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah is also on board in the cast. Certified costume designer Sheetal Sharma, who worked with Imtiaz on Chamkila, will dress the film’s period costume.

Pre-Production in Full Swing
Pre-production is already in the works, with look tests for Vedang and Sharvari recently conducted. Shooting for the film is set to commence in August 2025, and although it is based on the effects of Partition, the movie will not explicitly depict Pakistan, only making indirect allusions to it.

Rising Stars Headline the Cast
Vedang Raina, who debuted in 2023’s The Archies and later appeared in Jigra, is also a singer, having performed several songs in his films. Meanwhile, Sharvari, who won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for Bunty Aur Babli 2, gained further acclaim in 2024 with the horror-comedy hit Munjya.
With a strong cast, historical depth, and Imtiaz Ali’s signature emotional storytelling, this project is already generating significant buzz.
