It was Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta who started the trend of investing in sports back in 2008, when they bought a team in the Indian Premiere League. With almost no other sport finding any audience in India, it was Cricket which worked the best for all.
However, it was the recently held Pro Kabaddi League which changed the myth! Bollywood stars like Abhishek Bachchan, Jaipur Pink Panthers owner, and Ronnie Screwwala, owner of Mumbai team, invested in the Kabaddi league and pledged to revive the National sport. And to everyone’s surprise it worked, with the league becoming the second most watched after IPL. This not just worked for Kabaddi, but also opened doors for the revival of other sports in India.
And now, Bollywood stars have also bought teams in the upcoming Football league. Stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan and John Abraham have bought Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Northeast teams respectively in the upcoming Indian Super League.
Well, now looking at the success of the Kabaddi league, we are sure our B-town stars will manage to make the other sports a hit too in India!
