Bollywood box-office report of the week : 28 october 2009

The coming Friday will see two highly anticipated releases, Vipul Shah's Salman, Ajay and Asin starrer LONDON DREAMS and Sujoy Ghosh's ALADIN, which features megastar Amitabh Bachchan along with Riteish Deshmukh and Sri Lankan beauty queen Jacqueline Fernandez.

While LONDON DREAMS is likely to start off on a bright note in the cities and Overseas (thanks to Studio18's superb promotion), ALADIN may just spring a surprise due to the fact that it is getting attention from its target audience, the 'bachcha party'!

Last Friday's three releases FRUIT & NUT, LOVE KA TADKA and BAL GANESH 2 failed to entice the audience who preferred the Diwali releases, especially ALL THE BEST. The openings of FRUIT & NUT, LOVE KA TADKA and the animated BAL GANESH 2 varied from weak to very poor and the outcome is obvious!

While last week's BLUE started off on a brilliant note, its collections started dropping from Tuesday and badly from Wednesday. Despite that the Dutt, Akshay, Zayed and Lara starrer managed handsome shares in India (20 crores) and abroad in the first week. The film collected 2.55 crores from Bombay (collections from 57 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 crores from Ahmedabad, 8 lakhs from Nadiad, 10 lakhs from Anand, 50 lakhs from Baroda, 4.50 lakhs from Bharuch, 5 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 4 lakhs from Palanpur, 1.10 lakhs from Valsad, 36 lakhs from Rajkot, 8.50 lakhs from Jamnagar, 10.15 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 4.25 lakhs from Gandhidham, 28 lakhs from Pune, 5.50 lakhs from Solapur, 2 lakhs from Satara, 12 lakhs from Nasik, 13 lakhs from Goa, 7 lakhs from Hubli, 3 crores from Delhi city, 32.65 lakhs from Noida, 25.75 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 22.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 40 lakhs from Lucknow, 10.50 lakhs from Agra, 2 lakhs from Bahraich, 5 lakhs from Meerut, 4 lakhs from Bareilly, 4.65 lakhs from Aligarh, 9.50 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 3.05 lakhs from Muzaffarnagar, 55 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16 lakhs from Faridabad, 5.30 lakhs from Chandigarh, 3.50 lakhs from Zirakpur, 5.35 lakhs each from Bhatinda and Ambala, 8.50 lakhs from Panipat, 3.50 lakhs from Pathankot, 50 lakhs from Calcutta, 4.50 lakhs from Guwahati, 28 lakhs from Nagpur, 7 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.10 lakhs from Amravati, 3.65 lakhs from Akola, 14.50 lakhs from Raipur, 2.05 lakhs from Wardha, 2.50 lakhs from Chandrapur, 32 lakhs from Indore, 8 lakhs from Gwalior, 5 lakhs from Bhopal, 2.50 lakhs from Ujjian, 55 lakhs from Jaipur, 10 lakhs from Ajmer, 7 lakhs from Bikaner, 6 lakhs from Kota, 1.25 crores from Hyderabad, 6.25 lakhs from Aurangabad, 2 lakhs from Nanded, 1.50 lakhs from Parbhani, 5 lakhs from Gulbarga, 35 lakhs from Bangalore, 8.50 lakhs from Mangalore, 4 lakhs from Davangere, 3.35 lakhs from Madras, 1.10 lakhs from Coimbatore and 1.50 lakhs from Madurai. During its opening week BLUE netted a good 32 crores (given the competition) from India. But it has to be seen if it is good enough, given its huge 80 crore budget! In the Overseas, BLUE has grossed ?378,236 from UK up to the second weekend (23-25 October) while the US collections have not been disclosed.

Moving on to ALL THE BEST, it was a slow starter which picked up from the third day, thanks to media support and the resulting positive word of mouth. The jump was especially pronounced in the comedy patronizing areas of Bombay and also parts of Gujarat and C.I. The film collected 5.35 crores from Bombay, 1.25 lakhs from Lonavala, 2 crores from Ahmedabad, 55 lakhs from Baroda, 64 lakhs from Surat, 3 lakhs from Vapi, 10 lakhs from Valsad, 11.65 lakhs from Anand, 2 lakhs from Ankleshwar, 9.35 lakhs from Nadiad, 6.25 lakhs from Palanpur, 11.25 lakhs from Bharuch, 7 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 10.50 lakhs from Mehsana, 32 lakhs from Rajkot, 10 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5 lakhs from Porbandar, 4 lakhs from Junagarh, 3 lakhs from Surendranagar, 15 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 3.20 lakhs from Bhuj, 7 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.75 lakhs from Adipur, 1 crore from Pune, 7 lakhs each from Kolhapur and Solapur, 5 lakhs from Sangli, 20 lakhs from Nasik, 3 lakhs from Malegaon, 4 lakhs from Ahmednagar, 15 lakhs from Goa, 2.50 lakhs from Hubli, 6 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.50 crores from Delhi city, 20 lakhs from Noida, 13 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 14 lakhs from Kanpur, 25 lakhs from Lucknow, 6 lakhs from Agra, 4.50 lakhs from Meerut, 3 lakhs from Bareilly, 6 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 32 lakhs from Gurgaon, 11 lakhs from Faridabad, 4 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.50 lakhs from Zirakpur, 3 lakhs each from Ambala and Bhatinda., 35 lakhs from Calcutta, 2 lakhs from Guwahati, 28 lakhs from Nagpur, 5 lakhs from Jabalpur, 14 lakhs from Raipur, 31 lakhs from Indore, 6 lakhs from Gwalior, 7 lakhs from Bhopal, 2 lakhs from Ujjain, 35 lakhs from Jaipur, 9 lakhs from Jodhpur, 6.55 lakhs from Ajmer, 5.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 45 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2.55 lakhs from Aurangabad, 2 lakhs from Nanded, 3.35 lakhs from Gulbarga, 21 lakhs from Bangalore, 6.50 lakhs from Mangalore, 2.60 lakhs from Davangere, 1.15 lakhs from Madras and 2.40 lakhs from Coimbatore. During its opening week ALL THE BEST netted a satisfactory 23 crores from India, though it is not a patch on last year's Diwali release GOLMAAL RETURNS from the same team. But it is almost certain now that the 40 crore venture will be a success for all concerned. The film though has been totally rejected in the Overseas with a gross of: ?86,934 from UK, up to the second weekend (23-25 October), and an equally poor $120,713 (till October 22) from US.

It was obvious from the first day that MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA was a doomed project and the collections only confirmed that. The film obtained 85 lakhs from Bombay, 40 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2 lakhs from Nandiad, 2.35 lakhs from Anand, 16 lakhs from Baroda, 2.65 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Palanpur, 9 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.20 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 2 lakhs from Gandhidham, 7 lakhs from Pune, 1.35 lakhs from Solapur, 3 lakhs each from Nasik and Goa, 80 lakhs from Delhi city, 8.25 lakhs from Noida, 5.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 6.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 10 lakhs from Lucknow, 3 lakhs from Agra, 1.15 lakhs from Allahabad, 1.20 lakhs from Meerut, 3.25 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.75 lakhs each from Bhatinda and Ambala, 2.50 lakhs from Panipat, 12 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.75 lakhs from Guwahati, 7.15 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Jabalpur, 5.50 lakhs from Amravati, 1.50 lakhs from Durg, 5.50 lakhs from Raipur, 4.10 lakhs from Indore, 2.20 lakhs from Gwalior, 1.10 lakhs from Sehore, 10 lakhs from Jaipur, 3.05 lakhs from Jodhpur, 2.30 lakhs from Bikaner, 30 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.10 lakhs from Gulbarga, 2.50 lakhs from Mangalore and 1 lakh from Madras. During its opening week MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA has netted a poor 8 crores from India. The Salman, Kareena and Sohail starrer is a trade disaster. The film has also failed in the Overseas with poor grosses of ?183,743 from UK and $184,952 from US up to the second weekend (23-25 October), though it has faired better than ALL THE BEST here.

Although Karan Johar's WAKE UP SID had to surrender a lot of screens to the Diwali releases, it still managed to obtain some good numbers. The film collected 25 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 13 cinemas unreceived), 5.35 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.35 lakhs from Baroda, 2.10 lakhs from Pune, 1.10 lakhs from Goa, 20 lakhs from Delhi city, 3 lakhs from Noida, 2.35 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2 lakhs from Lucknow, 5 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.10 lakhs from Chandigarh, 5 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.10 lakhs from Nagpur, 10 lakhs from Hyderabad, 4.35 lakhs from Bangalore and 1.10 lakhs from Mangalore. During its third week WAKE UP SID added another 1.40 crores and has netted a good 26 crores in three weeks from India. Given the fact that the Ranbir-Konkona starrer has additional screens from this week (thanks to MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA vacating!) the film is all set to improve its above average status. WAKE UP SID has performed quite well in the Overseas, grossing a decent ?250,067 from UK and a good $710,487 from US up to the fourth weekend (23-25 October) and that means additional joy for its global distributor UTV.

Our last entry of this week is once again WANTED, which managed some good bonus Diwali numbers collecting 5 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 7 cinemas unreceived), 3.50 lakhs from Baroda, 1.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 2 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.05 lakhs from Kanpur, 3.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.10 lakhs from Bareilly, 1.65 lakhs each from Jabalpur and Raipur, 1.50 lakhs from Hyderabad and 2 lakhs from Aurangabad. Adding another 50 lakhs, WANTED has netted a handsome 60.50 crores in five weeks from India. The Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia and Prakash Raj film is now a hit plus from India. WANTED though has failed in the Overseas grossing a poor ?208,891 from UK and a so-so $349,637 from the US till the end of its run.
