Next Friday will see the release of two diverse genre films. Thursday (at some cinemas and then a regular release on Friday) will see Himesh Reshammiya's Radio DJ/FM film, RADIO, and the next day will see the dynamite father son duo of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan with a role reversal in the Progeria based movie PAA. One feels that given the budgets, 6 crore for RADIO and 15 crore for PAA, the films will be beneficial for the parties involved. However, what must be added here is that while there is a lot of curiosity and expectations from PAA, the hype is somehow not of the level that one expected from any of the two releases. Of the two, PAA is expected to be the front runner and is expected to put up some good numbers from Mysore, NCR and Bombay circuit multiplexes.
Last Friday saw a solo Eid-ul Azha release in the form of Priyadarshan's Akshay, Suneil, Paresh, Katrina and Sameera starrer, DE DANA DAN. Released at 111 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (thru Raksha Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.) the film saw a good opening at single-screen cinemas but was rather disappointing at the multiplexes. DE DANA DAN was also released at 90 plus cinemas of Delhi-UP (by Sukrit Pictures) and saw a good opening in U.P., East Punjab, Bihar, C.P. Berar, C.I. and Rajasthan but was below the mark in Delhi. The picture however changed on Saturday and Sunday and the film picked up further (and improved in Delhi and Bombay multiplexes also). During the weekend, DE DANA DAN netted a good 23 crores from India. DE DANA DAN has also done very well in the Overseas, grossing ?308,029 from UK during the opening weekend (27-29 November) and $772,377 from the US during the thanksgiving weekend. However, as per the trade, the Indian theatrical rights of DE DANA DAN were picked up by Baba Arts Limited for 31 crores and the rights were then sold off to sub-distributors at fancy prices and so DE DANA DAN has to sustain till at least the second weekend to succeed in India. EROS International, the overseas distributors are more or less in the safe in the safe zone, based on just the first weekend business.
