Bollywood box-office report of the week : 18 november 2009

The coming Friday will see three films taking on each other – Rensil D'Silva's KURBAAN, Devang Dholakia's MAREGA SALAA and the Shankar Mondal directed SHAABASH! YOU CAN DO IT. It is but obvious that the Karan Johar produced KURBAAN will be too hot to handle for both MAREGA SALAA and SHAABABASH! YOU CAN DO IT and the Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi starrer is likely to embark on a good start, both in India and Overseas.

As expected last week's battle was won by Kunal Deshmukh's Emraan-Soha starrer, TUM MILE, though it was the Hollywood venture, 2012 that turned out to be the champ of the week, both in its original English and the dubbed versions. The other release of the week, Aftab Shivdasani's AAO WISH KAREIN could not make any impression.

Released at 103 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (thru PVR Pictures Ltd.), TUM MILE embarked on an ordinary start but the opening was impressive in Delhi-U.P., C.I. and some centres of other circuits. However, the trade feels that TUM MILE will not be able to cover the investment of the producers, despite a very good initial at places. TUM MILE has been out rightly rejected in the Overseas with poor grosses of ?22,681 from UK and $13,937 from US during the opening weekend (13-15 November). In case of AAO WISH KAREIN, the film released at 25 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (By Mumbai Mantra Media Ltd.) and saw a poor opening. Outside of Bombay the opening was horrifyingly poor all over. As per the trade, the film is a total loss.

Our worse fears have come true and barring to an extent Bombay, Madhur Bhandarkar's JAIL has poor collections to show, as the film could not match up to the AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI tornado, despite a high release volume.
