Organisers of the 78th Cannes Film Festival have released a new dress code for gala screenings at the glamorous Grand Theatre Lumière, which will run from May 13 to May 24, 2025. The new guidelines aim to preserve elegance and decency on the legendary red carpet.
Nudity and Bulky Clothes Prohibited
According to the official document published on the Cannes Film Festival website, clothes promoting nudity are now totally banned for “decently reasons.” The organizers have also banned excessively voluminous dresses, especially those with large trains, as they have been said to interfere with the movement of the guests and make seating more difficult within the theatre.
Furthermore, the wearing of oversized bags, such as tote bags and backpacks, is prohibited during the gala events. To cater to the guests, lockers along the Gare Maritime will be accessible up until 12:30 a.m.
Evening Wear Compulsory for Red Carpet Affairs
For gala screenings that take place around 7 and 10 p.m., everyone who attends is required to dress formally. Suitable attire includes long dresses for females and tuxedos or dark suits with bow ties or dark-colored ties for males. Suitable alternatives for females are little black dresses, cocktail dresses, dark pantsuits, or black tops with black pants. Dressing should be formal sneakers are not acceptable.

Non-Compliance May Lead to Denied Entry
The welcoming teams of the festival have the authority to deny red carpet entry to those who do not qualify in terms of the dress code. The rules strictly come into force for gala screenings, but decent outfit would do for the rest of the events.
